About me
How does one talk about oneself without connecting it to a relationship? My name is Vera Powell – one of the daughters of the Living God through Jesus Christ.
Growing up in my culture taught me that an individual could change by making better, wiser choices. The highlight of my cultural background comprises many different sources. One significant highlight focuses on the African American way of life, my cultural background. I would be remised if I didn’t reference the influence my mother had on developing my character. She was extremely instrumental in teaching me about morals, the importance of positive attitude, good behavior and respect for self and others. She raised me according to the principles of the Holy Bible and values that were taught by her mother. Hence, it was customary to attend church regularly which, consequently, surrounded me with other family members, friends, and church leaders all of whom passed on their beliefs, traditions and patterns of living as well. Unfortunately, in my culture, many of the families were single-parent households (including mine) of women as a result of divorce or death.
In retrospect, there were some other forces of influences that contributed to my cultural background; these sources included the mass media, but mainly television. Through television, I learned about fashion, beauty, sports and other popular trends. The most popular sports of my culture were baseball, basketball, and football. Fast food restaurants and drive-in theatres were also influential to my culture.
In addition to African American culture, the community I grew up in assimilated other cultures and nationalities such as Puerto Ricans and Mexicans. But because of my exposure to the African American culture, its customs and traditions, assimilation played a pivotal role in cultivating other beliefs and behaviors such as etiquette. I was taught that it was proper to say please and thank you, and respectful to address older adult men and women as mister or mistress. As far a tradition goes, all cultures in the community celebrated the same holidays, such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter to name a few.
With respect to other popular beliefs specifically in reference to a climate of pluralism, it did not play a major role in molding my current identity. From a theological standpoint, however, my belief has always been (and currently is) in one deity and faith in one sound doctrine, God of the Holy Bible.
I was under the perception that much of the traditional beliefs and customs of my culture were ingrained, but now I perceive otherwise. Now, I assume a more significant and active stance in my life. For example, I do not convey, transmit, or reproduce many of the patterns and viewpoints passed down through generations. I explore creative and innovative ways of doing things. It helps me develop and expand my perception of others. It also helps me gain new insights into myself. I have sharpened my listening skills, and I embrace cultural diversity wholeheartedly.
